SUG@R is back online, 7/18 11AM
posted on 2008-07-18 11:44:16
The fileserver that provides home and projects directories is back online. SUG@R is now functioning normally and is accepting new jobs. If you were logged in to one of the login nodes during this time, please be aware that we had to terminate all of the login sessions in order to restore functionality to the login nodes.
Jobs that were already running on SUG@R are continuing to run though everyone should check on the status of their jobs to make sure they are still running correctly.
While we are still analyzing the source of the server failure, I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that you should *not* use $HOME (/users) and $PROJECTS (/projects) for job I/O. These filesystems are not designed to handle I/O from running jobs and are intended for permanent data storage only. You should be using scratch storage for job I/O. Please find more information about this topic in our Intro to SUG@R guide on this web site. Please report any problems to the Help Desk.

We are experiencing a problem with the SUG@R file server that provides home directory service. SUG@R will not be functional until this service has been restored. We will send more information as it becomes available.
Do not write job output to /users or /projects
posted on 2008-07-11 16:08:08
Please do *not* write job output to /users or /projects. These locations are for storing permanent data, not for active job output. We have a number of jobs currently running that are writing their output to either /users or /projects. This is causing a serious performance issue on the file server that is causing performance to degrade across the cluster.
Job output should be directed to $SHARED_SCRATCH. Keep in mind that $SHARED_SCRATCH is for *temporary* storage only and is intended only as a place to store data for job input and output while your jobs are running. Data that is not accessed after two weeks will be deleted automatically.
Please see our Intro to Sugar guide at http://rcsg.rice.edu/sugar for information on how and where to write job output.
Please contact the help desk at http://helpdesk.rice.edu if you have any questions.
Sugar is now accepting account applications
posted on 2008-06-21 16:27:44
Sugar is now accepting account applications and job submissions. You can apply for an account using the link on the left side of this web page. Please be sure to read the Introduction guide on this web site for important information on how to use this cluster. In particular, be sure that you do not use your home directory or projects directory for job I/O. We will be monitoring the usage and performance of this cluster over the next several days and will make adjustments as necessary. Please contact the Help Desk (helpdesk.rice.edu) if you have any questions or experience any problems.
