How Do I Use /projects?

28-Feb-2007

Introduction

The /projects filesystem is intended for data to be shared among users in a group.  Every faculty member has a default group and all users under that faculty member's sponsorship will belong to that group.  Additionally, faculty member might have more than one group depending on their needs.

Using /projects

You will only be able to write data into directories corresponding to your group membership.  In order to determine which group(s) you belong to, use the id  command:

rtcuser@rtchost:~> id
uid=3095(rtcuser) gid=1002(rtcgroup) groups=100(users),1002(rtcgroup)

Once you have determined your group membership, you will be able to find the corresponding projects directory at /projects/rtcgroup (where rtcgroup matches your group name).  You can create directories in /projects/rtcgroup as you wish.  It is suggested that you create a directory that matches your username (/projects/rtcgroup/username) but that is not required.  Everyone in your group will have read-write access to /projects/rtcgroup.

Adding a Group

Faculty members wishing to add a new group should submit a request to the Help Desk with the following information:
  • Machine name (RTC)
  • UNIX Group Name (8 characters or less)
  • Group Title (Formal Group Title)
  • List of all members if known
  • Purpose of the new group (i.e. file access restriction, queue restriction, etc.)
