How to Access the
Shared Computing Resources from RiceNet2

08-May-2008

Introduction

The Division if Information Technology is installing a new campus-wide network during the 2006-2007 time period.  This is known as RiceNet2.  The new network contains many new security provisions which requires changing the network address (IP address) of every computer on campus.  Computers on campus that have been moved to RiceNet2 are now part of one of the following security groups:  visitor, staff, research.  As a result, methods of access to various systems on campus has changed as well, including access to the Shared Computing Resources.

From Residential Colleges

If your computer is on a residential college network (wired or wireless), your computer is considered to be on a visitor network.  In order to access our systems from this location you will need to use a VPN account as if you were off campus.  Please see our Off Campus Access FAQ for details.

From Faculty and Staff Offices

If your computer is in an academic department office, it will be in either a staff security group, or a research security group.  Computers in either of these groups will have an IP address that looks like 168.x.x.x or 10.x.x.x.   Computers with either type of IP address will be able to access the Shared Computing Resources using SSH in the usual way.
