Ada Updates Summary for August, 2007

08-Aug-2007

Introduction

Ada was relocated to Rice's new Primary Data Center between July 26 and August 8. During this time, a few changes and updates were applied to the system and are summarized below.

Operating system maintenance upgrade

Several patch sets were installed on the Suse Linux 9 operating system. This required a complete reload of the operating system image on the login nodes and compute nodes. If you find that there are libraries that are no longer available, please inform the Help Desk and we will reinstall them for you.

Software in /usr/local moved to /opt/apps

All software installed in the /usr/local directory tree has been moved to the /opt/apps tree. For those of you who use the module command to set up the environment for various applications, you will continue to do so. You will not see any change. If you have been manually setting environment variables or have paths hard coded in your scripts, you will need to update your variables and scripts to reflect the new path.

Home directories in /home moved to /users

All home directories in /home have been moved to /users. The /home path will continue to work for a while until we fully transition the system tools to the /users path name standard. If you have scripts that have /home hard coded, you should begin rewriting these scripts to use /users. The /home path will be removed during a future maintenance period.

Getting Help

If you find anything that does not appear to be working correctly following this maintenance period, please inform the Help Desk.
